You and I know they won’t – or can’t. But do your clients know that?
Since we recently introduced JOVS® light therapy devices to the California Skincare Supply lineup, we’ve been talking with estheticians about how at-home light therapy fits into a professional skincare practice. These are devices your clients can use at home, giving you an opportunity to guide them toward the right technology and incorporate light therapy into the home-care plans you already recommend.
That has raised a very reasonable question:
“If I recommend a home light therapy device, won’t my clients stop coming in for treatments?”
It’s a fair concern, especially if you’ve invested heavily in professional equipment or already offer light therapy as a paid service.
But…
It’s a Conversation We’ve Had Before
There was a time when some skincare professionals worried that selling clients high-quality cleansers, serums, moisturizers, and other home-care products might reduce the need for professional facials.
After all, if clients could take better care of their skin at home, wouldn’t they need you less?
That’s not what happened.
Home care became an essential part of professional skincare because it helped clients maintain their results between appointments. Estheticians weren’t replacing their services by recommending home care. They were creating a more complete treatment plan.
Light therapy can work the same way.
Your Clients Are Already Seeing These Devices
Whether you recommend home light therapy devices or not, your clients are already seeing them.
Since adding JOVS to our product line, we’ve noticed just how actively the brand is marketing. Visit their website once and you’ll likely begin seeing JOVS ads across social media, blogs, and other websites. Their products are also available through major online marketplaces, making them easy for consumers to find and purchase.
And JOVS certainly isn’t the only brand your clients are seeing. Red light masks, LED devices, laser devices, and other at-home beauty technologies have become increasingly visible online.
The question isn’t whether they’ll hear about home light therapy.
They already have.
The question is whether they’ll choose a device based on an influencer, an online review, or a product listing—or ask the skincare professional who actually knows their skin.
If many of your clients are going to explore these devices anyway, there’s an opportunity to help them choose something that fits their skin, their goals, and the treatment plan you’ve created together.

What a Home Light Therapy Device Can’t Do
A home device can deliver light. What it can’t deliver is professional judgment – nor can it do everything a professional can do.
It can’t examine your client’s skin and recognize what’s changing. It can’t determine whether she needs a chemical peel, microneedling, dermaplaning, extractions, or another advanced treatment. It can’t identify when a treatment should be modified or when a particular modality may not be appropriate.
And it can’t create an individualized treatment plan.
That’s what you do.
That’s an important distinction, because the value of professional skincare has never been limited to the products or equipment in the treatment room. It’s knowing what to use, when to use it, and why.
But What If You Already Offer Professional Light Therapy?
This may be the bigger concern.
Perhaps you’ve invested $10,000, $20,000, or even more in professional light therapy equipment. Your clients already come to you and pay for professional light treatments.
Why would you encourage them to buy something they can use at home?

Why Isn’t a Home Device the Same as Your Professional Equipment?
Here’s the important thing to understand: a home device and a professional system can use the same wavelength of light without delivering the same treatment.
Professional equipment is built for a treatment room. Home equipment is built so a consumer can use it conveniently and repeatedly without a professional present.
Depending on the equipment, professional systems can offer several important advantages:
- More light energy delivered in less time. Professional systems can have higher irradiance, meaning they can deliver the desired dose of light more quickly during a treatment.
- Greater treatment coverage. Larger panels, canopies, or treatment heads can expose a larger area to light at once instead of relying on a smaller consumer device.
- More uniform delivery. Professional equipment may be engineered to deliver a more consistent amount of light across the treatment area.
- Greater control over the treatment. Depending on the system, the professional may be able to select wavelengths, treatment times, intensity, or protocols based on the client’s needs.
- Professional assessment and supervision. Perhaps the biggest difference isn’t inside the machine at all. You’re there to evaluate the client’s skin, choose the appropriate treatment, monitor the response, and determine what comes next.
That’s why comparing devices based on wavelength alone can be misleading. Seeing 660 nm on both a home mask and a professional machine doesn’t mean the client is receiving an equivalent treatment. Wavelength tells you what kind of light is being delivered; it doesn’t tell you the entire dose, coverage, uniformity, treatment protocol, or level of professional control.
So What’s the Benefit of the Home Device?
Frequency and consistency.
Your professional equipment stays in your treatment room. Your client’s home device goes home with her.
That means she can use it regularly between appointments according to the manufacturer’s directions and your recommendations, rather than receiving light therapy only when she comes to see you.
And that’s where the two can work beautifully together.
Professional light therapy gives you the advantages of professional equipment, professional protocols, and professional supervision. At-home light therapy gives your client convenient, consistent access between appointments.
One doesn’t have to replace the other.
The home device can help extend the light therapy regimen beyond the treatment room, while you remain the professional guiding the overall skincare plan.
The Real Opportunity Isn’t the Device
There’s a bigger opportunity here than making another retail sale.
Your clients can buy skincare products and devices without ever setting foot inside your treatment room. What they don’t get with that purchase is someone who understands their skin, knows their treatment history, and can determine how—or whether—a particular device belongs in their overall skincare plan.
When a client asks, “I’ve been seeing these red light masks everywhere. Do they actually work?” that’s not necessarily a threat to your business.
It’s an opportunity to demonstrate why your professional guidance matters.
Sometimes your recommendation may be a home light therapy device. Sometimes it won’t be. The value isn’t simply having a device to sell.
It’s knowing the difference.
Home Technology Doesn’t Replace the Esthetician
Home skincare technology isn’t going away. Devices will continue to improve, new technologies will appear, and your clients will continue hearing about them.
You don’t have to compete with that trend. You can become the person who helps your clients make sense of it.
That’s ultimately what professional home care has always been about: using your knowledge to help clients make better decisions about what they do between appointments.
A home device may extend the treatment plan beyond your treatment room.
But your expertise is still what guides it.
